Deutsche Grammophon Opens Classical Streaming Catalog to University Libraries

STAGE+, the Deutsche Grammophon streaming platform for classical music and jazz, is introducing institutional licensing for universities and research libraries worldwide. The new academic offer gives students, faculty and researchers access to more than 20,000 audio albums alongside livestreams, operas, concerts and documentaries, spanning 119 years of recordings from major labels.

How the institutional licensing works

Libraries can choose between two models: a campus license covering every member of an institution, or a shared consortium arrangement for library networks negotiating joint terms. Off-campus access is handled through IP authentication, meaning authorized users can stream content from outside the university network without separate logins once their institution has registered its access points. This structure mirrors licensing approaches already common for academic journal databases and digital archive subscriptions, but applied here to audiovisual classical and jazz content.

What the catalog includes

The academic tier draws on recordings from Deutsche Grammophon, Decca Classics, ECM Records, Blue Note Records, Impulse!, Verve Records, Hyperion, Myrios and Carus. According to STAGE+ General Manager Dr. Sven Fund, the platform's distinction lies in combining audio catalogs with concert and opera video, both live and on-demand, under a single institutional license - content that is typically scattered across separate academic audio and video platforms. Opera productions include subtitles in ten languages, and searchable metadata covers works, composers, performers and ensembles.

Technical specifications and library tools

Depending on the production, audio streams up to 24-bit/48kHz lossless quality with Dolby Atmos support, while video reaches 4K resolution. For library administrators, STAGE+ provides dedicated interfaces and usage statistics, features aimed at helping institutions track engagement and justify subscription costs to budget committees - a standard requirement for academic database procurement.

Availability and limits

The offer is available globally, with libraries and consortia able to request trial access and pricing directly through STAGE+'s website. Pricing details were not disclosed in the announcement, and institutions will need to contact the service directly to evaluate costs against existing library budgets. The service continues to operate alongside its consumer subscription tier, which remains separate from the institutional model.
